SnapRead Privacy Policy

Effective date: June 25, 2026 · Last updated: July 11, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how SnapRead ("SnapRead," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you and your child use the SnapRead mobile application (the "App"). SnapRead is published under the bundle identifier dev.martingale.snapread and is hosted at snapread.org.

If you have any questions, contact us at support@snapread.org.

1. Who we are and who the App is for

SnapRead is an AI-powered reading app for children ages 4–13. A parent or legal guardian creates and owns the account; each child reads under a child profile that the parent sets up and manages. Because the App is directed to children, we have designed it to comply with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA") and to minimize the data we collect from and about children.

Parents are responsible for account creation and for supervising their child's use of the App. Children do not create accounts, and we do not knowingly allow a child to register without a parent. A parental gate protects account creation, purchases, and links that leave the App.

2. What we collect and why

All of the data below is first-party data that we collect to operate the App. It is linked to your Firebase account ID (the parent's authenticated user ID) and/or to a child profile's unique identifier (a UUID). None of it is used to track you across other apps or websites, and we do not sell it.

Data we collect Who it relates to Why we collect it
Email address Parent Create and authenticate the account; account recovery and essential service messages
Child's first name (or display name) Child Personalize the child's profile and stories
Child's age Child Tune story reading level, vocabulary, and content to be age-appropriate
Story topics you type or speak Child / parent Generate the requested story
Generated stories, quizzes, and vocabulary lists Child Deliver, save, and re-display the content you created
Optional profile avatar photo Child Display a custom avatar (only if you choose to add one)
Usage events (story opened/clicked, liked, finished) Child Make the App work (history, "liked" lists), power badges/streaks, and personalize the daily feed
Account and profile identifiers (Firebase user ID, profile UUID) Parent / child Operate the App and associate your content with your account
In-app purchase history (transaction identifiers, subscription status) Parent Process, restore, and validate purchases; manage your subscription tier
Device identifier (a random ID the App generates and stores on the device) Device Enforce the one-time free-trial allowance and prevent abuse of the free trial (for example, by repeatedly reinstalling the App). It is not linked to your account or your child's identity, and is never used to track you across other apps or websites

What we do NOT collect: we do not collect precise or coarse location, contacts, browsing history outside the App, advertising identifiers, or diagnostics through third-party ad or analytics SDKs. We do not serve third-party advertising. The App ships with no third-party tracking, analytics, or advertising SDKs. The device identifier described above is a random value the App itself generates solely to prevent free-trial abuse — it is not an advertising identifier and carries no personal information.

Optional fields

Certain legacy profile fields (such as address, phone, and payment details) are not used and not requested by the App and are being removed. We do not ask children for, and you should not enter, any contact or payment information beyond what Apple handles for purchases (see §4).

3. How voice input is handled

When a child uses voice to enter a story topic, the device's operating system (Apple) converts the spoken audio into text using Apple's speech-recognition service. We do not store the raw audio recording. Only the resulting text transcript is sent to SnapRead to generate the story, and that transcript is treated like any other typed topic (see §2). Speech processing is governed by Apple's privacy practices (see §4).

4. Sub-processors and third-party services

We share the minimum data necessary with the following service providers strictly to operate the App. They act as our processors and are not permitted to use your data for their own purposes such as advertising.

Provider What it handles Privacy policy
Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore database, Cloud Storage) Account sign-in, storage of profiles, stories, events, and uploaded avatar images https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy
OpenAI Generates story text and text-to-speech narration audio from your topic https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy
Google Gemini (Google Cloud / Google AI) Generates story text, quizzes, vocabulary, and illustrations from your topic https://policies.google.com/privacy
Apple On-device / OS speech-to-text for voice topics; processes In-App Purchases via the App Store https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

When we send a topic to OpenAI or Google Gemini to generate a story, we send the topic text (and the child's age, to tune the result). We do not send your email address, your child's name, or your account identifiers to these text/image providers.

5. Data retention

We retain your account information, child profiles, generated content, and usage events for as long as your account remains active, so the App can show your history and saved stories. Purchase records are retained as needed to provide and restore purchases and to meet legal and accounting obligations. When you delete your account (see §6), we purge the associated data as described below.

6. How to delete your data and contact us

You can delete your account and its data from inside the App at any time:

Profile menu → Delete Account (signed-in accounts) Profile menu → Delete My Data (anonymous guest sessions)

Deleting your account (or your guest data) triggers a cascade purge that removes:

Account deletion is permanent and irreversible. Note that Apple retains its own records of purchases and subscriptions under Apple's policies; you can manage or cancel an active subscription in your Apple App Store account settings.

One exception — the anonymous free-trial marker. To stop the one-time free trial from being reset and reused indefinitely, we retain the device identifier described in §2 (and the count of trial stories used on that device) even after an account is deleted. This record holds no personal information and is not linked to the deleted account, your email, or your child — it is an anonymous, device-scoped marker used only to enforce the free-trial limit. It is the only data not removed by the cascade purge above.

To make a privacy request, ask a question, or report a content concern, email us at support@snapread.org.

7. Parental rights under COPPA

As a parent or legal guardian, you have the right to:

We collect personal information from a child only as reasonably necessary to operate the App, and we do not condition a child's participation on disclosing more information than is reasonably necessary. To exercise any of these rights, contact support@snapread.org. We may need to verify that you are the parent or guardian associated with the account before acting on a request.

8. No sale of data; no third-party tracking

We do not sell or rent personal information. We do not use your or your child's information for behavioral advertising, and we do not allow third parties to track users across other apps or websites through SnapRead. The App contains no advertising SDKs and no third-party analytics SDKs.

9. International data transfers

SnapRead is operated using cloud infrastructure that may store and process data in the United States and other countries. If you use the App from outside the United States, you understand that your information (and your child's information) may be transferred to, stored in, and processed in the United States and other jurisdictions where our service providers operate. We rely on the providers listed in §4, who maintain their own safeguards for such transfers.

10. Security

We use industry-standard measures provided by our infrastructure providers (such as authenticated access, transport encryption, and access controls) to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the Effective date at the top and, where appropriate, provide additional notice in the App. Your continued use of the App after an update means you accept the revised policy.
